Judge Kevin Miles Named UC Clermont Distinguished Alumnus

Kevin Miles, Clermont County Municipal Court judge, has been honored with the college’s 2018 Distinguished Alumnus Award.

UC Clermont recognizes an outstanding alumnus each year. To be eligible, an individual should have distinguished themselves through significant professional accomplishment, made contributions to their community and attended UC Clermont College for at least one year. The recipient is honored during the academic year and addresses graduates at the college’s commencement celebration in April.

Miles, who earned his associate degree from UC Clermont in 1991, is a resident of Union Township, Ohio, and grew up in Anderson. He wasn’t sure about his future but he was attracted to UC Clermont. “I wanted to go to college. UC Clermont was close to home,” Miles said. “When I got on campus, I really enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and smaller classes. The professors were very approachable and helpful, and that started me on my path to higher learning. UC Clermont ignited my critical thinking, my desire to learn more and my confidence that I could do it at the college level.”

After graduation, Miles transferred to Northern Kentucky University to finish his bachelor’s degree and was first drawn toward law through his political science classes. After earning his bachelor’s, he took the LSAT and enrolled at NKU’s Chase College of Law. He was drawn toward criminal law, and eventually served as a Clermont County prosecuting attorney from 2000-2013. He was named chief assistant prosecuting attorney in 2013 and later appointed and re-elected to the Clermont County Municipal Court bench. Miles has served as the presiding and administrative judge since January 2016.

“People are in the system because there’s something wrong; either they’ve committed an offense, or they’ve been victimized,” Miles said of his profession. “As a judge, helping people in the community when they’re most vulnerable is a rewarding experience. We also hope we’re making Clermont County a safer place. I have my family here. I have roots here. I want to make sure it’s safe, too.”

In addition to his duties as a judge, Miles has also worked as an adjunct instructor for UC Clermont’s Police Academy, and is dedicated to his community, having served in the Clermont County Trustee Association and on the committee for the Clermont County Bar Association Scholarship, among others. He has also been involved in citizen police academics throughout the county.

“Judge Miles embodies the great mix of academic achievement, professional success and community involvement that UC Clermont wants to foster in all of its graduates,” said Glenda Neff, UC Clermont director of outreach, who nominated Miles for the award.

UC Clermont College will honor Miles as the 2018 Distinguished Alumnus at the college’s Commencement Celebration on April 27th, to be held at The Crossing church in Batavia.
