Dedication Service Held to Honor Body Donation Families
Those who donated their bodies to ensure the excellence of medical education and the advancement of medical science at the UC College of Medicine and their families will be honored during a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14. The memorial service will take place in the Norman Chapel at the historic Spring Grove Cemetery.
Representatives of the College of Medicine, and clergy from the Catholic, Jewish and Protestant faiths will conduct services. Following the ceremony, the cremated remains of the donors are buried in a plot at Spring Grove and are identified by a monument with the inscription, "Through Their Thoughtfulness Knowledge Grows."
"The thoughtfulness of donors provides physicians and research scientists with the opportunity to gain knowledge which may prolong or improve someone's life," according to Richard Drake, PhD, professor of cell biology and director of the Body Donation Program.
Enrollment in the program is open to anyone 18 years of age or older. Upon enrollment, a donor card is provided and should be carried by the donor at all times.
The memorial service is conducted each year to publicly thank the honored families and friends of individuals who donated their body to science through the UC program. Friends and family are invited to the memorial service, and a register with the names of the donors that are being honored is on display.
