UC Department of Family Medicine Receives $2 Million in Federal Training Grants

The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded the UC Department of Family Medicine $2 million in training grants over the three-year period from 2003-2006.  The funds are supporting the development of new education programs and the expansion of some existing ones.

All grant-supported projects revolve around the UC Department of Family Medicine's long-standing commitment to teach trainees about health disparities and cultural competence in the care of underserved populations.  The Department is using the HRSA funds to develop a new "Underserved" Family Medicine Fellowship, an innovative Family Medicine "Underserved" Residency Track, enhanced medical student training in the Family Medicine required third-year medical student clerkship and a broad program in home and hospice care.

These new programs are being implemented by the following UC Family Medicine faculty:  Orson Austin, MD, associate professor of clinical medicine; Joe Kiesler, MD, assistant professor; Bruce Gebhardt, MD, associate professor of clinical medicine; and Doug Smucker, MD, associate professor.  The programs' goals are to teach trainees how to provide culturally-sensitive, high quality primary care to minority and other underserved populations.
