Hess, Lampkin Named Local Legends

Four distinguished women physicians from Ohio now have one more distinction to add to their impressive resumes: they have been named Local Legends. 

The Local Legends program, a partnership between the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM), asks U.S. senators and members of Congress to nominate outstanding women physicians from their state or district for this unique honor.  Local Legends is a companion project to an exhibition created by the NLM titled Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America's Women Physicians. The project spotlights these women – their lives, their achievements, their dreams, and the challenges they faced in becoming physicians.

The Local Legends from Ohio are Clara Bloomfield, MD; Evelyn Hess, MD, MACP, MACR; Beatrice Lampkin, MD; and Mary Jo Welker, MD.

The honored Ohio women were officially recognized in February at the AMWA annual meeting in San Diego, California.  A Local Legends Web site (

) will be launched next month, and a DVD created by McNeil–Lehrer Productions for the National Library of Medicine and AMWA will be released next year. 

Biographies of UC's Ohio Local Legends:

Evelyn Hess, MD, MACP, MACR

Dr. Hess is currently professor of medicine in the Division of Immunology, Department of Internal Medicine, UC Medical Center.  She graduated from University College in Dublin, Ireland. In his nominating letter, Rep. Rob Portman commented that Dr. Hess's "body of work stands as a living testament that one person can make a difference in the quality of life for many individuals." Named one of the Cincinnati Enquirer's "Women of the Year" in 1999, Dr. Hess has received numerous awards and was listed in the 2004 edition of Best Doctors in America. 

Beatrice Lampkin, MD

Dr. Lampkin is currently professor of pediatrics at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Division of Hematology/Oncology, and the UC College of Medicine.  She graduated from the University of Alabama and trained at the Medical College of Virginia, Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, and Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. Nominating Dr. Lampkin, Rep. Rob Portman said "her efforts in these programs have profoundly impacted the city of Cincinnati as well as the state of Ohio."

The AMWA is an organization of 10,000 women physicians, residents and medical students dedicated to advancing women in medicine and improving women's health.
