UC Faculty Receives Research Award

A UC scientist who studies nutrition in the prevention and treatment of diabetes and cardiovascular disease has won the Ohio Dietetic Association's 2004 Research Dietitian Award.

Sarah Couch, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences in UC's College of Allied Health Sciences, is currently studying the effects of a diet emphasizing fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products and low-fat, low-sodium foods on adolescents with hypertension.

She is collaborating in this research with Stephen Daniels, MD, PhD, professor of pediatrics and environmental health  at UC College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Hypertension Clinic. The work is funded by a grant in aid from the Ohio Valley Affiliate of the American Heart Association.

Dr. Couch earned her PhD at the University of Connecticut and was a research associate at Columbia before joining UC. She has published numerous scientific papers in the leading journals in her field and also serves on the Board of Editors for the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.
