Gun Violence Prevention Program, Funeral Home Hold Remembrance Ceremony for Lives Lost

CINCINNATI—The “Out of the Crossfire” Gun Violence Prevention Program and J.C Battle and Sons Funeral Home have teamed up to host the second annual Ancestral Remembrance Celebration on Friday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m.

“The holiday season is often difficult for people who have lost loved ones,” says Michele Battle, co-owner of the funeral home. “With the use of music, dance and poetry, the Ancestral Remembrance Program gives families and friends an opportunity to come out and celebrate the lives of those who have passed on.“

The event will take place at the Corinthian Baptist Church,

772 Whittier St., Avondale, and is open to the public.

The “Out of the Crossfire” program is sponsored by the Cincinnati Bar Foundation, University Hospital and the University of Cincinnati. The program focuses on treating gunshot victims with intensive counseling and other services beyond immediate care of the trauma wound.

The Rev. Dia Mari-Jata will give a eulogy for Cincinnati gun violence victims, then Jennifer Williams, manager of the “Out of the Crossfire” program, will talk about its mission.

The Ancestral Remembrance Celebration will feature musical performances by Atlanta-based kalimba (African “thumb piano”) player Kevin Spears, and local gospel recording artist Teresa Teri. Attendees can enjoy complimentary food from Aunty’s Homemade Food at Findlay Market while shopping at local vendors.
