Concert to Benefit UC Medical Student Scholarship Fund

CINCINNATI—The University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine will host the fourth annual IvaDean Scholarship Benefit Concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in the Medical Sciences Building’s Kresge Auditorium, 231 Albert Sabin Way.

The event, which features musical performances from College of Medicine faculty, staff and students, aims to support the IvaDean Medical Student Scholarship Fund for medical students in need of financial assistance.

The fund, named after assistant dean IvaDean Lair, was created by the outgoing medical class of 2003 as a way to honor Lair’s 40-plus years of service to the college and provide relief to students burdened by the escalating costs of medical school tuition.

Daniel Burr, PhD, assistant dean for student financial planning at the college, says that more than half of the 2007 class graduated with over $150,000 in outstanding educational debt.

“Medical school is not only expensive, but it’s also very challenging,” says Burr. “Our goal is to train and graduate leaders in the medical field. By providing opportunities for financial support, we are allowing students to focus even more on their studies and not on how they will manage financially.”

Since 2004, the IvaDean Medical Student Scholarship Fund—set up as a permanent endowment—has generated $81,000 to fund scholarships. Students are awarded scholarships based solely on financial need. Eleven students currently benefit from the fund.

The benefit concert is open to the public. Tickets are $5 for students and children and $20 for adults, and can be purchased at the door. All event proceeds will directly support the IvaDean Medical Student Scholarship Fund. For more information, call (513) 558-5577 or e-mail benefit.concert@gmail.com.
