Focus On Medical Residents With Michael Boldt, MD

Second-year OB-GYN resident Michael Boldt, MD, is proud to be a buckeye who didn’t fall far from the tree.

I have lived in Cincinnati since age 5. We moved to Milford (on the East Side) at that time. I went to Milford schools and graduated from Milford High School, not knowing I would go into medicine or end up back in Cincinnati. I went to Ohio University in Athens for undergrad. I was initially a psych major, but changed majors my first year to biology, pre-med. The summer between my junior and senior years in college, I was fortunate to get a summer undergrad research project here at UC.

Why medical school?

I chose to go to UC for medical school for several reasons, the biggest being that I knew it was a great program. I wanted to be trained in an urban setting with exposure to as many patients and patient populations as possible. University of Cincinnati Medical Center gets a lot of referrals and transfers, being a Level I trauma center. I also considered doing pediatrics and knew that Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center would give me great exposure. Initially I thought I would do residency outside of Cincinnati and Ohio, but during my rotations as a fourth-year medical student, I realized how much I loved Cincinnati and the program at UCMC that I was lucky enough to match into. Also having family, friends and a wife who already had a career here helped.

What’s next?

As far as plans for the future, I intend to stay in Cincinnati after completing residency. I would love to stay at UCMC if they will continue to put up with me, but would be happy working in the private practice setting.

Residency hours are known to be demanding. What do you do in your off time?

As resident I do not have much time off as I would hope, but I enjoy running, listening to music, especially live music. Having family in town is another advantage I try to spend as much time with them as possible. Otherwise, it is very likely I will be relaxing with my co-residents outside of the hospital on our free weekends.

UC lab-on-a-chip devices take public health into home

May 8, 2025

University of Cincinnati engineers created a new device to help doctors diagnose depression and anxiety. The “lab-on-a-chip” device measures the stress hormone cortisol from a patient’s saliva. Knowing if a patient has elevated stress hormones can provide useful diagnostic information even if patients do not report feelings of anxiety, stress or depression in a standard mental health questionnaire.
