Nursing Students Awarded Scholarships

Six students from UC’s College of Nursing were awarded scholarships at the InterAct for Change and Deaconess Associations Foundation 2014 Nursing Scholarship and Nursing Excellence Awards, held May 1.

Awardees are:

Faye Brown, MSN student
Brown has been awarded the 2014 Laura Rosnagle Scholarship and will receive $2,000. She is an urgent care emergency services nurse at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and is described as having great compassion and empathy for her patients and natural leadership in the unit. Brown graduated with her BSN cum laude and has been nominated for the Daisy Award, which recognizes extraordinary nurses.

Angela Clark, PhD student
Clark has been awarded a 2014 Deaconess Associations Foundation Advanced Practice Nursing Scholarship and will receive $10,000. Described by one nominee as "the best Graduate Assistant I have worked with in 30 years,” Clark is member of the Sigma Theta Tau nursing honor society and is active in several substance abuse prevention committees. She plans to continue conducting original research on addiction and to educate nursing students after achieving her degree.

Jennifer Legere,
BSN student
Legere has been awarded a 2014 Deaconess Associations Foundation Nursing Scholarship and will receive $5,000. She has a degree in criminal justice and has worked in the community as a law enforcement officer—an experience, Legere says, that led to her desire to practice nursing in a lower socioeconomic area. Legere hopes to eventually pursue a doctoral degree.

Jillian Magner, MSN student
Magner has been awarded a 2014 Deaconess Associations Foundation Advanced Practice Nursing Scholarship and will receive $10,000. A nurse at Cincinnati Children’s, Magner has been called "an amazing RN” with excellent skills in clinical judgment. She performed a year of service in Honduras and has volunteered at the Good Samaritan Free Health Center of Price Hill since 2011. She hopes to eventually open a free clinic in a lower income community.

Jessica Schneider, MSN student
Schneider has been awarded a 2014 Deaconess Associations Foundation Advanced Practice Nursing Scholarship and will receive $10,000. A nurse at University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Schneider has been called a leader on her floor, with an ability to teach at many levels. She has interests in women’s health, geriatrics and primary care and plans to go on to earn her doctor of nursing practice (DPT).

Tristen Yarborough, BSN student
Yarborough has been awarded a 2014 Deaconess Associations Foundation Nursing Scholarship and will receive $5,000. Described as dedicated, punctual, and treating others with respect and dignity, Yarborough hopes to eventually pursue a master’s in public health to better prepare her for work within the community.
