Cecil Striker Annual Lecture April 14 Celebrates a Century of Learning

The 100th anniversary of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Nursing is being celebrated at this year’s Cecil Striker Society Annual Lecture on April 14, 2016. The lecture is hosted by the Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions and the Cecil Striker Society for the History of Medicine.

The event will feature a presentation at 4 p.m., followed by a Q&A at 5 p.m. and a reception at 5:30 p.m. Julie Fairman, PhD, RN, will present the keynote address, "Making History: From the University of Cincinnati to the Future of Nursing.”

"History gives us perspective and provides data that helps us understand things better,” Fairman says. "If we don’t understand the context of what we do, we won’t have the fullest possible understanding of how we provide nursing care.”

Fairman is a Nightingale Professor of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and Chair of the Biobehavioral Health Sciences Department. Fairman is the co-director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholars program, and the director emerita of the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing.

"As the first Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in the country, we take great pride in being an integral part of the history of nursing,” says Greer Glazer, PhD, dean of the UC College of Nursing. "We’re thrilled to have someone of Dr. Fairman’s caliber coming to celebrate and explore our profession’s history with us.”

"We are excited to have Dr. Fairman, who has been a participant in the prestigious Institute of Medicine, present the lecture,” says Marianne Ivey, PharmD, professor emerita, UC Pharmacy Practice and Administrative Sciences and chair of the Winkler Center Advisory Board. "The lecture celebrates the contributions of professionals and programs of various health care disciplines to quality patient care that have originated in the Greater Cincinnati area.”

All are welcome to the lecture. Please RSVP by calling 513-558-5120.
