Med Students Pump Iron to Raise Money for Breast Cancer

UC medical students are holding special fundraiser, "Bench Press to Beat Breast Cancer” on Friday, October 7, 2016, from noon to 4 p.m. on the steps of CARE/Crawley Building.  Funds raised support the I Have Wings Breast Cancer Foundation in Erlanger, KY.

Entry fee for the competition is $20 and participants receive a free T-shirt. Participants will choose a group in which to participate and press the weight for as many times as they can. Winners of each category for both men and women will receive a Chipotle gift card.

Sign up on line.

The categories are as follows:

Female: 45/65/95 lbs.

Male: 95/155/225 lbs.

Participants are welcome to choose any weight they want; however, the maximum amount of repetitions in the lower weight classes will be capped at 25. After 25 repetitions at the lower level, participants will be moved to a higher category in the competition to perform maximum repetitions.

"In other words, we encourage participants to lift in an appropriate category so less experienced lifters have a proper chance at winning Chipotle and glory,” says Zachary Crawford, a second-year med student and event organizer. "In the event of a tie, participants will perform additional sets of maximum repetitions until the tie is broken”

If you're on the fence about joining in, just remember that no one cares about what weight you do, it's just about coming out to support each other and a good cause and break a sweat while doing it, says Crawford.
