Academic Health Center Rings in 2017-2018 Academic Year
Students, faculty and staff in the Academic Health Center at the University of Cincinnati (UC) celebrated the start of a new academic year with a New Years Eve celebration at University Commons on Aug. 18, 2017. Over 250 people joined the party which featured members of the marching band, cheerleaders, the Bearcat mascot and comments from leadership of the Academic Health Center colleges.
"Work hard, play hard, was the advice given to the students by Greer Glazer, PhD, dean of the College of Nursing. "We do want you to play because you cant just work all the time, but you have to work hard so you keep the end in mind.
Tina Whalen, EdD, dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences, encouraged the students to build compassion within themselves.
"We often say a predictor of success is not only IQ, which is your intelligence, its EQ, your emotional intelligence, Whalen said. "Work hard to develop that empathy muscle in your undergraduate experience.
Anil Menon, PhD, program director of the undergraduate program in Medical Sciences, also encouraged the students to work on more than just getting good grades.
"Cultivate a good heart, this is very hard to do, but try, said Menon. "Cultivate a good mind as well, and if you do those two things, you will be able to go successfully to graduation.
After remarks and the ceremonial dropping of the Bearcat C-Paw banner from the Marriott Kingsgate Conference Center terrace, student tours were offered by each of the colleges.
