UC Goering Center news
New thinking for new times
By Lisa Jonas
Lift! speakers promise to expand your point of view
Here we are. It’s mid-June. And in six freaky-fast months we have had to intellectually process radical change while feeling pressured to articulate a point of view on topics that are both controversial and highly nuanced.
As individuals, the protests and pandemic have tested our ability to empathize while figuring out, and daring to express, our personal truths. As business leaders, we recognize the far-reaching implications of our actions and our words – and the opportunity to affect positive change if we happen to get both right. How do we shepherd our organizations, our families, and ourselves through this era of change?
I don’t have those answers, but I do know that we need to stop. We need to breathe. We need to listen. And we need to talk to each other in a safe haven.
This fall, the Goering Center will present its second annual Lift! Conference. Five local leaders will share their point of view on a variety of topics in business, providing a new lens through which to examine 2020 and begin 2021 with an elevated perspective. We are pleased to announce this elite group of big thinkers and invite you to save the date – Oct. 8, 7:30 a.m. - Noon – for both yourself and your team.
Featured speakers
Marianne Lewis, Dean, Carl H. Lindner College of Business, University of Cincinnati
Topic: Leading and thriving through tension
Tensions pervade our organizations: efficiency-innovation, local-global, profit-purpose. Either/or problem solving is decisive, consistent yet limited, while a both/and approach engages competing demands simultaneously to fuel creativity. Using highly engaging examples and interactive discussion at both organizational and personal levels, we will examine the power of a paradox mindset and practices.
Darice Michelle Thompson, Culture & Communications Strategist, Designed for Destiny
Topic: Embracing diversity
How wide is your diversity gap? Michelle Thompson will challenge leaders to identify problem areas in their organizations and inspire them to reap the benefits of a diverse culture. She will share personal stories and case studies of being “color brave” vs. “color blind” in our local business community and challenge the audience to answer questions related to staffing, boards and suppliers to determine a go-forward strategy.
Scott McGohan, CEO, McGohan Brabender
Topic: Culture is an inside job
You can't act your way out of something you behaved your way into, you can only behave your way out. Society and most of life teaches us to build and create our lives from the outside, in. But building yourself and your culture from the inside out is the beginning of a beautiful new story. By seeking self-awareness and leveraging the power of friendship you can equip yourself to do your part to make your organization, and the world, a better place to be.
Cory Carlson, Executive Coach, Author and Speaker
Topic: The prioritized leader: How to win at both home and work
Many of us focus on winning at work. Whether it is from our own fear or the expectations of others, we put pressure on ourselves to succeed. Then, with whatever time and energy is left, we give to our family and to ourselves. This talk will inspire and equip leaders to win at home and at work by using the Five Capitals Framework – a simple tool to help us prioritize and thrive.
Amanda Hill, CEO, Female Forward
Topic: The 3 keys to building an enduring brand
What does your brand stand for? And will it endure beyond your leadership tenure? Amanda Hill will share the three tenets to building a successful and enduring brand, as well as showcase examples of familiar and local brands who do it to the highest level. The work begins with your positioning pyramid, so be ready to roll up your sleeves, think it through, and get writing.
The Goering Center's Lift! conference happens Oct. 8 from 7:30 - Noon.
