The University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) and Chongqing University (CQU) in Chongqing, China, recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of their Joint Co-op Institute collaboration.

Ever since she garnered an appreciation for chemistry in high school, fifth-year University of Cincinnati student Jaclyn Bashore has not looked back. When she graduates with a chemical engineering degree and a minor in chemistry this spring, Bashore will have had six co-op experiences — along with a new full-time job at AbbVie, a biopharmaceutical research company with whom she did two co-op rotations. To commemorate her exceptional co-op work, the UC College of Engineering and Applied Science awarded Bashore the 2024 Herman Schneider Medal, an annual award given to a graduating senior who demonstrates outstanding success as a co-op student.

“There is no point of waiting to be an upperclassman to try to take on a leadership role.” These are the words of self-given advice that have guided University of Cincinnati student Adolphus Addison – advice that he also hopes to extend towards fellow young engineers. Currently in his second year studying biomedical engineering at UC’s College of Engineering and Applied Science, Addison has already amassed an impressive list of accomplishments.

Through his research in aerospace engineering, University of Cincinnati doctoral candidate Anirudh Chhabra aims to develop systems that can help us better explore and understand space. He also aims to fulfill his passion for teaching by pursuing a career in academia post-graduation, teaching others about space exploration and technology. Chhabra’s research as part of the Intelligent Autonomous Systems Research Laboratory (IASRL) has been federally funded, and he was named the Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by UC’s College of Engineering and Applied Science.

His latest venture, a charitable organization called ShareBuilt, connects construction professionals with nonprofit groups.

As an aspiring power engineer, University of Cincinnati student Matt Smeal hopes to contribute to a more sustainable world by working towards better energy solutions. Smeal is a fifth-year electrical engineering student at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) specializing in electric energy systems with a minor in environmental studies. Currently, he serves as vice president for Clean Up Cincy, a volunteer litter clean-up organization, and is a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Theta Tau engineering fraternity. He is also one of the first students to enroll in CEAS’s new Master of Engineering in Sustainable Energy, through the ACCEND program. ACCEND enables undergraduate students to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees concurrently.

The University of Cincinnati’s College of Engineering and Applied Science welcomed seven new faculty members starting in August 2023 at the start of the 2023-24 fall semester. There were an additional six faculty members that joined CEAS at the start of the 2022-23 spring semester in January 2023.
