Service and Volunteering

Providing service to and participating in active, meaningful volunteering in your community, campus and the greater good is essential to your dedication as a pre-health student to demonstrate that you have the heart of service, as healthcare professionals should. 

  • Volunteer and service opportunities can and should span different interest areas, not solely healthcare. Explore your other passions and strengths to give back in those areas! 
  • Utilize UC'S Center for Community Engagement -- to find all sorts of UC and Cincinnati volunteer opportunities!
  • This is a listing of local hospitals, hospices, clinics and healthcare agencies. Students often start with volunteering but over time may be able to secure shadowing opportunities through these volunteer connections.

  •  AMCAS has encouraged all Medical Schools to look at medical exploration in a broader sense for the coming years. To assist applicants with getting medical exploration, AMCAS provides the following resources. 
  • AAMC Aspiring Docs website has great information on shadowing, healthcare volunteering, and more, and these tips are useful for all types of pre-health tracks (not only pre-med).
  • Read provided information! Be sure to understand the mission of each opportunity or program as well as the application process.
  • When researching summer programs, remember that deadlines come about as early as December.
  • Confirm program dates to avoid conflicts.
  • Remember that you are representing yourself as well as the University of Cincinnati. Maintain professionalism and a positive work ethic.
