Why study Immunology?

The Immunology Graduate Program at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children's Hospital aims to provide unparalleled training for the next generation of forward-thinking and innovative immunologists. Our program offers rigorous coursework and practical training in some of the world’s most outstanding immunology laboratories within the U.S. News & World Report #1 ranked Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Our top-notch faculty’s extensive experience in teaching and expertise in all areas of immunology provides the student with a well-rounded immunology training experience and preparedness for a future post-graduate career path in immunology.

All Ph.D. students accepted to the program receive coverage for the full cost of tuition, a nationally competitive stipend, and a health insurance plan.

Our program seeks first-class applicants with outstanding undergraduate training. Ideal candidates have training in biological sciences and preferably have research experience.

Admission Requirements

Qualified applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree (or higher degree) from an accredited college or university
  • GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Strong undergraduate background in biology, preferably with some research experience
  • **GRE is not required 

Our graduates move onto traditional academic Post Docs at Harvard, Stanford, and Duke, and the NIH; others get nontraditional Post Docs in industry at companies like Eli Lilly and Jansen Pharmaceuticals.  

Our Alumni are in the industry as well as Academia. They lead research teams, consult for large corporations, work in tech transfer, clinical trial management, patent law, work for the FDA, CDC, and oversee compliance and integrity.

Students in the Immunology Graduate Program have access to outstanding core facilities including state-of-the-art flow cytometry and cell sorting, 2-photon imaging, gene targeting and transgenic mouse core, bioinformatics core, gene expression core, pluripotent stem cell facility, laser capture microdissection core, viral vector core, and many others. More information on Research at CCHMC.

International Research Training Group (IRTG)

An IRTG has been established between the Immunology Graduate Program and the University of Lübeck/Research Center Borstel in Lübeck, Germany. 

The research focus of the IRTG is:

  1. Humoral and Cellular Pathways of Allergic Inflammation
  2. Immuno-Regulation of infection-driven inflammation

Students interested in research projects encompassed by these areas may have the opportunity to study and perform research in the beautiful city of Lübeck in north-central Germany for a 3-6 month period. 

Successful defense of a dissertation and publication of at least one first-author article. Two first-author articles are preferred.

Our program requires a TOEFL score of 100 iBT or higher, or a 7.0 overall band score on the IELTS.

Application Deadlines

Admission deadline is January 1 for Summer enrollment. The program begins during the month of July for new students.
