Why study Translation and Translation Studies?

Translation & Translation Studies is an interdisciplinary, cross-college certificate that draws from curricular offerings in various departments such as English, Romance & Arabic Languages & Literatures (RALL), German, Asian, and Judaic Studies. Some classes are also be dual-numbered in order to allow upper-level undergraduate students to enroll. Rather than being targeted at specific languages, the curriculum will allow students from various programs and linguistic backgrounds to share ideas and discuss translation issues. This certificate is a professionalizing complement to existing Master's and doctoral programs.

Admission Requirements

Any graduate student admitted to a UC program would be eligible for the certificate. Graduate students interested in completing the Certificate will need to contact the Certificate Director.

The Certificate is open to students on both West and East campuses, especially to those in Nursing, Medical Studies, and those preparing to work in the health care industry who might benefit from bi-lingual and pre-professional translation expertise. Faculty members in RALL teach Medical Spanish and have contacts with Nursing faculty and students in particular. The Certificate Director will work with students wishing to complete this Certificate within the timeframe of their graduate degree program to discuss options, exceptions, and possible substitutions as needed. All exceptions and substitutions will need to be approved by the Certificate Director.

There is a steadily growing demand for translators. Careers are available in public and private sectors, including the medical field. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor: “Employment of interpreters and translators is projected to grow 19 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. Globalization and large increases in the number of non-English-speaking people in the United States will drive employment growth. Job prospects should be best for those who have professional certification.”

Additionally, the Cincinnati metropolitan area is experiencing growth in Spanish- and French-speaking communities. More businesses, including hospitals, public schools, and manufacturers, are in a need of French or Spanish to English competent translators to ensure the services they offer are more inclusive.
