Why study Sport Coaching?
Enroll in the Sport Coaching certificate at the University of Cincinnati to gain key knowledge and skills that coaching and organizing an effective sports program require. This program is designed to give coaches the tools to help athletes perform their best.
Our Sport Coaching certificate program provides a strong foundation of the theories and basics of coaching, and is designed for practical applications such as the administration of youth and adolescent sports programs, as well as young athlete development.
Here are a few highlights of this certificate:
- Athlete-centered approach to social-emotional skill-building and leadership development
- Relationship-building and creating a positive team culture
- Effective communication skills
- Physical training, planning for a season, and long-term athlete development
- High-quality instructional delivery and feedback
In addition, the certificate includes many of the required training components necessary for applying for the Ohio Department of Education Pupil Activity Permit, which is required to coach at a public school in Ohio.
Admission Requirements
This program is open to all students (internal and external to UC) with a high school diploma or GED and the desire to succeed in college. Although admission is open, students accepted into the program must meet the academic standards of the program to advance to upper levels of study.
External Applicants:
- Must have high school diploma or GED
- Apply for admission to the certificate
Current UC students:
- 2.0 GPA with UC before applying and continuing in the program
- Apply for the certificate
UC's Certificate in Sport Coaching offers a combination of courses in sport administration, health promotion, exercise science, athletic training, and human development. Coursework caters to sport administrators, educators, health and fitness professionals, strength coaches or anyone who has the desire to further skills in their profession. Students who have an interest in working in the community and developing young athletes are great candidates for the certificate in sport coaching.
Graduates of this program will be prepared for the careers listed below. All opportunities may not be listed.

This program will prepare all students to apply for the Ohio Department of Education Pupil Activity Permit, which is required to coach at a public school in Ohio.
In order to obtain the Sport Coaching certficate, a student must:
- Complete all required course work and program requirements.
- Obtain at least a 2.0 university grade point average.
- Be in good academic standing; that is, not on academic or disciplinary probation or suspension.
To transfer to UC, you must be in good academic standing at the college or university you last attended.
