Why study Cosmetic Science?

The University of Cincinnati offers an Online Cosmetic Science Certificate Program that strives to meet the needs of individuals currently working in the cosmetic and personal care industry and students in related fields who would like to gain employment in this area. This certificate provides unique training opportunities for students interested in cosmetic science provided by our internationally recognized faculty. 

The Cosmetic Science Certificate Program is designed to (1) advance the science of skin care, cosmetic formulation, and hair care; (2) promote the development of high ethical standards in clinical and instrumental testing of skin care products; (3) improve the professional practices and status of the cosmetic science professionals; and (4) encourage and support education and research in cosmetic and related sciences. This certificate program is delivered in an online format that enables learners to advance their education without disrupting their current personal or professional roles. The online learning format allows learners to access program content on their own time and at their own pace allowing for a more flexible approach to teaching and learning.

Admission Requirements

Programmatic minimum admission criteria include:

  • A U.S. bachelors degree from a regionally accredited college or university or an equivalent degree from foreign country.
  • A grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.00 or foreign equivalent.
  • At least one semester of undergraduate course work in organic chemistry and calculus, or related fields; or the equivalent as determined by the graduate program
  • Resume/CV
  • If English is not your native language, a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of at least 90 (internet-based) or 235 (computer-based) is required.

Transcript Information

All college transcripts with evidence of high academic achievement (undergraduate and graduate if applicable; unofficial transcript is sufficient for initial review process).

Unofficial transcripts are sufficient to make offers of admission. However, all official and final transcripts must be received by the Graduate School by 30 days before the start of class enrollment to secure admission offer.

Letters of Recommendation

Two letters of recommendation, three preferred (applicants are encouraged to seek letters from individuals who can comment on research experience). Letters of recommendation from family, friends, current students, politicians, or clergy are not accepted.

If credentials are less than required for admission, an applicant may seek provisional admission status, which is granted at the discretion of the Program Director.

Over the past several years the college has evaluated the cosmetic science market and has dertermined that the certificate program provides a resource for mid-level industy professionals in the field of cosmetic science to advance their education. The certificate allows professionals, who may not otherwise be able to attend traditional educational programming, an opportunity to transcript evidence of advanced training.

The information provided is sourced from a third party, Lightcast. Their product, called Career Coach, combines extensive labor market data from Lightcast and the U.S.Bureau of Labor Statistics. It provides insights on industry, occupation, compensation, and projected growth for each profession. Economic and workforce information is available for various geographic regions. Some careers may require additional training or education.

This online program is designed to meet the needs of students with baccalaureate undergraduate degrees in the sciences who are currently employed in the cosmetic, personal care and chemical industry and wish to advance their careers, or those who are interested in pursuing careers in this field.

  • All courses are offered asynchronously over the internet to accommodate the work and travel schedules of those who wish to take courses without distraction from their current employment.
  • Each student collaborates with the academic advisor to develop a Plan of Study as a framework that outlines their courses for completion.
  • Asynchronous learning with discussion forums and state-of-the-art learning management system allows convenience for effective learning.
UC offers a certificate program to be delivered in a distance learnng online format that ultilizes best practices. UC currently is the only institution to offer this online learning opportuntity in Cosmetic Science. 
To fulfill graduation requirements the student must complete a minimum of 12 graduate hours while in the program, with a GPA of 3.0 or greater.
Students who are accepted into the certificate program are eligible to apply for advanced standing to have their transfer credits evaluated for acceptance.

International students are eligible to apply

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all applicants whose native language is other than English. The minimum score required for admission is 90 (internet-based test). If you have a bachelor degree or higher from a United States university, this requirement will be waived.

Foreign applicants whose transcripts are not easily read may be asked to submit a full evaluation of transcripts by a U.S. agency is an option.
