Why study Cancer and Cell Biology?
Graduate training in Cell and Cancer Biology has a long history at UC. For many years, the Program was run by the Department of Cancer and Cell Biology. In 1994, the Program was expanded and is now truly interdisciplinary and interdepartmental, with participation from over 50 faculty members from multiple departments and divisions of UC as well as Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). Faculty selected to join the program are recognized leaders in their fields and provide excellence and dedication in graduate training. As a consequence, our graduate students excel in research, are highly successful in their scientific careers, and experience a richer environment for learning Cancer and Cell Biology.
All PhD students accepted to the program receive a full-tuition scholarship, a nationally competitive stipend, and a health insurance plan. Successful completion of the program typically involves four to six years beyond the Bachelor’s degree, varying according to background and special interests. It is our philosophy that the PhD training must be intellectually stimulating, congenial, and geared toward a successful career in modern research.
Admission Requirements
Program faculty are concentrated in the UC Department of Cancer Biology, which administers the Program, and in the Division of Experimental Hematology and Cancer Biology at Children’s Hospital, with additional faculty drawn from more than 10 other departments/divisions at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
The Program Manager provides general advising on coursework and administrative support to all students. Students' mentors will provide individualized guidance to students in their labs.

Application Deadlines
The Cancer & Cell Biology Graduate Program Admissions Committee will review applications on a rolling basis during the application window. All required materials must be submitted online to the University of Cincinnati Graduate School by the deadline provided on the "How to Apply" on our website. We have limited slots available in the program and encourage you to apply early to remain competitive.
After a thorough screening of applications, personal interviews will be arranged for a select group of competitive candidates. Some interviews will be on campus while others will be conducted remotely. The interview serves as an opportunity for the applicant to meet faculty and graduate students, to see the Program’s research facilities, and for members of the Program to evaluate the prospective student.
Noteworthy Considerations When Completing Your Application
- Select "Fall" as the semester to apply not "Summer", even though accepted students will begin in the program in July.
- While we use grades and test scores as part of our ranking process, we give greatest emphasis to the candidate’s personal statement, research experience, letters of recommendation, and interviews.
- For select candidates, an Offer of Admission will be made between January and April of the spring prior to the fall admission.
- The program begins July 1. New students are only admitted once per year.
- Effective Fall 2019, the GRE or MCAT is not a required component of the application; however, it is highly encouraged to submit test scores to contribute to a holistic view of your abilities.
