Why study Occupational Safety and Ergonomics?

The Environmental and Occupational Hygiene division faculty maintain nationally and internationally recognized research programs in the broad areas of anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of workplace and environmental exposures. Specific research programs are devoted to the techniques for sampling chemical and biological aerosols,  relationships between exposures and internal markers of effect, relationship between exposure and such chronic diseases as silicosis and lung cancer, occupational ergonomics, biomechanics, safety, relationship between workplace physical/chemical risk factors and workers’ neuromuscular performance, historic and current exposure assessment, characterization of lead exposures, environmental intervention studies, and effect of neurotoxic chemicals on neurobehavioral performance. Ph.D. students conduct independent research which advances their particular field of interest.

  • Unofficial transcripts for ALL higher education institutions attended
  • Three Letters of Recommendation from individuals familiar with your academic or professional background.
  • GRE, GMAT, and/or MCAT scores
    • The Admissions Review Committee will take into account many factors for admissions decisions.  Official GRE, GMAT, or MCAT scores should be at the 50th percentile or better.
  • International applicants whose native language is not English (please refer to the university English Proficiency Requirement, https://grad.uc.edu/fac-staff/handbook/graduate-admission/international-admission/english.html) must take the TOEFL exam and submit official scores directly from the testing agency to be considered for the program.  The above website also gives a list of additional exams and certificates that are approved by the University.
  • International transcripts should be evaluated by WES.
  • Official transcripts of all colleges and universities must be submitted if accepted to the program. These must be official, therefore copies cannot replace official records from higher educational institutions attended.
The information provided is sourced from a third party, Lightcast. Their product, called Career Coach, combines extensive labor market data from Lightcast and the U.S.Bureau of Labor Statistics. It provides insights on industry, occupation, compensation, and projected growth for each profession. Economic and workforce information is available for various geographic regions. Some careers may require additional training or education.

Application Deadlines

The deadlines for complete applications for each semester are as follows:

  • Fall - July 1st
  • Spring - November 1st 

Only students applying to the full-time programs in Occupational Safety and Ergonomics are eligible to receive University Graduate Assistantship funding. This funding in not available for our part-time MS or PhD programs in Occupational Safety and Ergonomics. Funding is generally only available in the Fall semester and any application to be considered for funding must be completely submitted by February 1st.
