Why study Innovation and Design Thinking?

The certificate of transdisciplinary innovation and design thinking offers students a formal pathway to learn about and apply design thinking and innovation mindsets, tools, and applications across multiple disciplines and industries. This cross-college certificate brings together multiple courses and experiential learning opportunities within the innovation space, and offers students flexibile pathways for choosing courses and experiences focused on different types and applications of innovation and design thinking.

This certificate includes coursework and experiences in these focus areas:

  • Exposure to various definitions of innovation, types of innovation, and their applications
  • Cultivating and promoting adaptable, resilient mindsets that enable creative problem solving
  • Developing confidence in tackling complex challenges with high degrees of ambiguity
  • Introducing a variety of problem-solving frameworks and tools that can be applied to diverse challenges
  • Learning to work in cross-disciplinary innovation environments and teams
  • Understanding and applying non-linear and iterative approaches to problem solving
  • Casting vision and inspiring others to pursue innovation through speculative designs, scenarios, and approaches 

 

Admission Requirements

This certificate is open to all University of Cincinnati undergraduate students. 

Rather than focusing on a specific discipline or subject-matter area, transdisciplinary innovation and design thinking frameworks skills can be leveraged and applied across a variety of fields, topics, and industries, making them applicable to a wide variety of career paths. Innovation and design thinking skills are directly applicable in careers where understanding systems and developing new solutions are core, such as consulting, strategy, insight development, and design research.

It provides insights on industry, occupation, compensation, and projected growth for each profession. Economic and workforce information is available for various geographic regions.
